The residents of Sabuwar Gandu Community in Kumbotso local government area of Kano metropolis are appealing for urgent intervention over the worsening state of their roads and lack of proper drainages to channel water ways in the community.
Residents of the community who lamented total neglect of relevant government agencies despite several complains about the situation , complained that Sabuwar gandu quarters has been under threat of erosion in the last 16 years.
Sabuwar gandu quarters are one of the largest communities in Kumbotso local council area, which is one of the eight metropolitan local Governmentof Kano state.
The original settlers of Sabuwar gandu community were part of those relocated from Gandun Sarki, the present Audu Bako secretariat of Kano in 1982.
As a new community, Sabuwar gandu has a well-structured architectural layout to accommodate residential quarters with basic amenities.
However residents ofthe community are lamenting the poor state of their roads which they claimed has received little or no government attention over the years.
This blogger met with one of the original settlers of Sabuwar gandu community Alh. Ahmad Muhammad who narrates the suffering of the community in the last 20 years, pleading for government to rescue them from threat of flood
“he said I have been in this area since 1982 ever since we have been trying our best to develop the community but we need government to construct roads and drainage, we have visited all the necessary officials but to no avail, the last letter we sent was on the 8th January 2014 to commissioner of land “
Alh. Gazali Umar, a resident of this 33 year old community, also argued that residents of the area can no longer enjoy smooth motor drive around the community due to total damage of the roads and bad drainages.
“During the tenure of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in 1999 we did not have electricity and roads, gradually we got electricity and water, however the issue of roads and drainages are what we are in dear need of “
Secretary of Sabuwar gandu development association Mal. Hassan Abbas said that despite several official complains forwarded to the state government, no response emanate from any quarter.
“our problems are mainly roads and drainages, from this area of Sabuwar gandu down to Kumbotso local government is in mess, for the past ten years we wrote to the ministry of land and physical planning, since then no body borders to see to our issues, even commercial vehicles don’t like coming to our area”
Efforts to speak with commissioner for lands, charged with the responsibility of construction of metropolitan roads did not yielded positive results as the commissioner was not around even after several visits. However, unofficial information gathered revealed that government has received the complainsof the community and necessary design on the roads have been concluded but still awaiting budgetary allocation.
It is hope that government would consider the plight of Sabuwar gandu community in good time.
