Flooding is among the most devastating natural disasters in the world, claiming many lives and causing more property damage than any other natural phenomena in Nigeria, though not leading in terms of claiming lives, flood affects and displaces more people than any other disaster, which also causes more damage to properties.
Despite the phenomenon Nigeria government tend to pay lip service to the menace of flooding, not looking that every year similar problem play itself again and again.
In Kano for instance, flooding has been a source of concern most often attributed to lack of clearing our environs, particularly the drainages.
Kawo quarters, is a densely populated area located in Nassarawa local government, an area termed for the elite is one among many local governments in Kano that witnessed the heavy downpour leading the major roads due to poor or lack of proper drainages.
Kawo, towards Eastern Bye pass road is always over flooded due to lack of drainages and deplorable condition of the road. The road is not more than 5 kilometers from the government house.
The construction of the road started in 2002/3 by the Kwankwaso administration and was later completed by Ibrahim Shekarau administration.
Nevertheless, the lack of Drainages was the major reason for the flood that put the road into its present condition, ‘’said a resident of Kawo who plead anonymity while talking to Baraka on Environment’’.
